We put up the Christmas tree on Monday night. Sam cannot believe his luck, that we would give him this big green toy to play with. It’s like Christmas has already come for him. He loves to feel the tree, and yank the branches. We’re working on the concept of ‘gently’ as he cranes his body to get a fistful of needles. He can pet the tree, but as soon as he wraps his fat little fingers around a branch, I peel them off and say no. When he is gentle, I say “Yes! Gently!” I think he gets it, because when he does touch gently, he looks at me for the praise. And when he tries to pull the tree over, he just has the twinkle of determination that haunts me as he army-crawls toward toddlerhood.
